How to establish a skincare routine

With the sheer magnitude of skincare products out there today, establishing a skincare routine can seem like a daunting task. Ingredients, formulations, oils, treatments. It can all seem quite complicated if you don't know where to start. All you want is your skin looking its best, right? Keep reading for my tips for establishing a basic skincare routine!

1. Start with the basics: cleanse, tone, & moisturize. These are the bare bones of a basic skincare routine. To make things even easier, most brands have a 3-step system already in their range. I used the Clinique 3-step system for years until I became more adventurous with my skincare. Kiehl's Ultra Facial collection is also a love of mine, and both brands then have variations for different skin types.

2. The extra step: eye cream. Once you've got your cleanse-tone-moisturize routine down, the next step that I would add is eye cream. Most people think eye cream is for anti-aging, but you'd be surprised at how dehydrated the eye area gets. Something simple like Kiehl's Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado is a great start, and your under-eye concealer will go on great!

3. Incorporate "weekly specials". Once you've got a daily routine that you're comfortable with, try adding some products that you only use once a week. I would suggest an exfoliator and a mask specific for your skin type.

4. Apply layers from lightest to heaviest. Ok, so you're feeling pretty comfortable with your routine now, and you want to start adding products more targeted to your skin's specific problems, such as serums and oils. The key to remember when using multiple products is to layer them from lightest to heaviest. Also, incorporate new products in gradually, and keep your basic routine the same while adding a new product.

5. Be consistent! Whatever you do, be consistent. Start with small steps (like the cleanse-tone-moisturize routine, morning and night), but make sure that you do it. Skin loves consistency, so skipping just one step will make a difference.

What are some of your favourite skincare products??

  1. I've been using the Kiehl's Avocado eye treatment at night and I really like it. Now I'm trying out the Mignight Recovery oil. You're right, we need to be consistent to see a difference. Haha. One thing that I still need to work on =P

    1. Yeah consistency is a big player in skincare. You'll love the Midnight Recovery Oil, it's soooooo good. Can't wait to hear what you think!

  2. Consistency is always my nemesis. I'm totally going to try out this eye cream you speak of - I'm going to need it turning 30 soon!

    1. Joelle, I still can't believe you're almost 30. You don't look a day over 25!
